Team members answer questions about themselves and their role at Eduserv
Julie Clapp
Project Manager
I’m responsible for the delivery of solutions, which can sometimes be hardware or software development, as well as other external and internal projects. Project managers are lucky in that they have a bird’s eye view of the whole organisation. I need to be able to hold my own in technical conversations, whether conversing with technical departments internally or externally on the client side, but I tend to focus on management of delivery, managing risks, issues, budgets, timescales and so on.
I’ve been working at Eduserv for two and a half years. Before that I was a project manager for a large telecoms and defence company.
I like the size of the organisation, and the fact that you know everyone who you need to deal with. There is a fairly flat structure - not the layers of bureaucracy that I have been used to in other places. The culture here is informal and friendly. I also enjoy being involved in projects from start to finish – it is a good experience to have control of the full project lifecycle, picking up a project from the bid stage and seeing it through to delivery and ongoing service support. I deal with lots of people, and I’m quite a people person so I enjoy that. I also enjoy the customer contact and the satisfaction of delivery. You never manage two projects that are the same, and each one has its own challenges and learning curve. I also enjoy the fact that I’m now based in Bath – I used to work on an industrial estate in Newport!
Today we’ve been planning the delivery of a shared portal for several Higher Education institutions, Microsoft and ourselves. I’m also involved in the delivery of a website for a national enterprise support and development body, making sure our on call team knows what to expect, and supporting the customer to make sure they know the site is ready, tested and good to go. I’ve been involved with this project since it started several months ago, so to see the final website is really satisfying.
I came here a Prince2 practitioner project manager. Since joining Eduserv I’ve been through the ITIL foundation course and I am now a Managing Successful Programmes practitioner, and those were both funded and supported by Eduserv.
